    Biochemistry (Hons)
    2:1
  • 1994 - 1998 University of Bristol Bristol, Avon BS8 2TY, UK
PhD: Probing the dynamic and conformational properties of the chaperonins GroEL and GroES.
~These highly cooperative multimeric molecules communicate between subunits, my aim was to characterise this quantitatively. This characterisation was on two levels: (i) the mechanistic implications of nucleotide binding and hydrolysis with respect to the overall reaction cycle, (ii) the mechanism of information transfer in a positive and negatively cooperative manner.

Professional Experience

  • 2001-present Postdoctoral Fellow Dept. Molec. Physiology and Biophysics, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT.
  • 1998 - 2001 Postdoctoral research associate, School. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Leeds Leeds, LS2 9JT, UK
~This project initially involved coercing a monomeric protein to form fibrillar structures in vitro, by altering growth conditions. Following this, a number of techniques were employed to study the growth mechanism and morphologies of these fibrils.
    ~
ß2m can be made to form two distinct morphological types under different solution conditions. These morphologies were studied using EM and AFM and using growth rate profiles the significance of these types was investigated.

Exhibits

  • 1995 Scientific Power to the People Exhibition – Bristol, Avon.
    Bristol Exploratory
